Very slow custom map downloading

Post by tonka » Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:07 pm

I have redirect set up nicely but when the custom maps download it is taking 1 hour 30 minutes to download a 20 meg map. About 3 to4 kbs.

I have tried redirect from the ftp that GS gave me with the server and HTTP server website I have.

Any help willl be appreciated.

Thanks
Tonka

Okay here's the deal. The gameservers do not offer fast HTTP downloads so you can not put your custom maps on them for transfers. They throttle the bandwidth to around 12 kps to porotect anyone from "hogging" all the available bandwidth.

SO, if you have a hosting website that supports large storage needs and fast http downloads and ample ftp uploads this is what you do:

In your hosting site make a folder off the root called

COD4

Then make two folders off of that as follows:

mods/"yourmodnamehere"

usermaps

Put all IWD files (as well as mod.ff and all config files) into the mods/"yourmodnamehere" folder
Put all maps into the usermaps folder

Make sure that your gameserver reflects EXACTLY all files and folders like your redirect.

Then go to your server.cfg and make sure that the following lines appear with your names substituted for mine.

Mine are below:

set sv_allowdownload "1"
set sv_wwwDownload 1
//set sv_wwwbaseURL "http://www.mediamax.com/fightingmedic/cod4/mods/uff"
//set sv_wwwbaseURL "http://www.mediamax.com/fightingmedic/Hosted/cod4/mods/uff"
set sv_wwwdldisconnected "0"

That should do it. If the download speeds are around 12kps then the redirect is not set up right or is unavailable.

Hope this helps!

Don't worry about it all of this is giving me a headache. I really can't be arsed anymore. I'll let my server run until the end of the month and then it can disappear into the depths of cod 4 customisations basements. I'll be a player not a server. It is less stressful.

well your wrong about a few things fightingmedic.

1. GS does cap their bandwidth speed to their servers not the websites hence why you only get 12-13 kb/s download speed, if the website redirect is setup properly then the downloads speeds may vary from 200-800 kb/s depending on your connection & ISP

2. if thats your setup for your redirect settings then it wont work since you have // in front of your website redirect setting

3. not all iwds go into the mods folder, some maps require that the iwd remain in that particular map folder. Best bet is to read the readme.txt file that comes along with the map

Make sure you add the .ff and .iwd file extentions to your MIME types in your cpanel on website. I saw a post about that on the AWE mod site. If they are not added it kicks the redirect back to the server and the 12kps.

Can You be more specific Or include the link for the information if possible
about setting up the MimeType?
here are a few examples of what i am talking about:
"audio/x-ms-wma wma
image/x-xwindowdump xwd
audio/x-ms-wax wax"

there are so many settings, does it matter how they are set up
in Cpanel?

We rent a COD4 gameserver out of Seattle. I notice that Gameservers offers 500mb and 1 gig storage. Will I get faster DL's for custom maps should I purchase on of those?

I use the free site for my redirect and i was getting 500kps download speed. They only give you 100mb so you can host maybe 3 maps depending on the size. The 500 and 1gb will give you more storage but the speed should be the same.

Just add the iwd and ff ext. to the user defined part and you should be good to go.

Are you sure its not 100mb? The free site you get is capped at 100mb of storage.
